“And You Can Tell Everybody”

Part Four

“Anyway the thing is what I really mean

Yours are the sweetest eyes I’ve ever seen”

It’s long after midnight when Jensen knocks on Jared’s door, but the lights are still on inside.  He hears the dogs barking and hears Jared shushing them before he opens the door.

He’s apparently fresh out of the shower, dressed only in soft, warm sleep pants, toweling his hair dry.  He stops short when he sees Jensen.

“You came back.”

Jensen takes a deep breath and hopes his voice doesn’t shake.  “Jay, you have to be quiet, okay, you can’t talk, you just gotta let me….”

“Okay, okay.  Just come inside.”  Jared interrupts him softly and moves aside to motion him in.  “I’ll be quiet, Jen.  I promise.”

Jensen slips past him, careful not to touch cause he can’t do that.  He knows if he touches him, he’ll never get this all said.  He walks on through the house to the sliding glass doors that lead outside.  Opens them and it feels better out here, he can breathe.  The night air is just this side of cool.  Stars splashed over the sky like a spray of diamonds.  Fireflies dancing in the trees.  It’s a summer postcard and Jensen closes his eyes, tries to hold onto this moment in case he fucks things up and it’s not the beginning he’s hoping for.

Jared’s behind him.  Close but not too close.  True to his word, silent and waiting.

Jensen doesn’t look at him because, like with the touching, he can’t do that.  Not yet.

“Jay, I’m..uh….I’m pretty fucked up.”  He laughs, short and bitter, shakes his head.  “No, actually, I’m way, horribly fucked up.”

He shoves his hands in his pockets to keep them from shaking.  “And, I mean, I know I shouldn’t have left like that.  You’ve gotta know I didn’t want to, you’ve gotta know that I thought I was doing the right thing.  And, I’m sorry.”

“Jen….”

“Shut up, you’re not supposed to talk.”  Jensen manages to look up and smile at him to take the sting out of the words and gets a grin in return.

“Okay.  Shutting up.”

“Yeah.  So, yeah, I’m sorry, Jay.  So fucking sorry, I never meant to hurt you.  I just….Jesus, you just scare the hell out of me sometimes.  You tilt at windmills, you take on the world, you’re not afraid of anything, and I just….”

“You’re wrong.”  Jared tosses the towel down and walks over to stand in front of him and, just like that, Jensen decides that it’s not that he’s too close.  He’s not close enough and Jensen’s glad his hands are still in his pockets because he’s never wanted anything more than to touch him.

“I’m afraid of a lot of things, Jen.  Hell, half the time I’m probably twenty-five percent confidence, twenty-five percent curiosity, and fifty percent bullshit.”

Jensen stops holding his breath and laughs.  “I thought you weren’t gonna talk.”

“You know better than that.”

“Yeah, I do.”

Jared steps closer, reaches for Jensen’s hand and his fingers are warm and strong and solid.  Jensen holds on tight.

“Jen, I faced one of my biggest fears today when I woke up and found you gone.  Because I didn’t know what to do to fix it, to get you back, to get you to believe that I’m here and I’m not going away, no matter what.  But whatever it takes to convince you of that, I’m gonna do it.  Because you’re worth it.  We’re worth it.  And if being with you means my career is over……and I don’t believe that, by the way……but if it does, then so be it.  I’ll do something else.  And, you can do whatever you want because you might be pretty, but you’re a thousand other things besides and, if you’ll just stop leaving me, I’ll tell you about all of them.”

He steps closer and kisses him there in the yard, under the summer sky, soft and sure and easy and makes Jensen believe in happy ever afters.

The breeze, damp with the promise of morning rain, kicks up and Jared shivers a little.

Jensen starts to pull away.  “You should go inside.”

Jared doesn’t let him go.  “Don’t go home, Jen.  Please?”

Jensen shakes his head, his voice steady and sure.  “I am home.”

The rain wakes Jared up, soft against the windows.  He gets up quietly, leaving Jensen sleeping, and goes to stand in front of the glass.  The trees are bathed in mist; the lawn looks freshly washed, thick and lush under the summer rain.  He loves it here, his own little corner of the world.  He’ll figure out the washing machine and give his boyfriend back his house key.  He thinks he’ll send the movers for Jensen’s things today, this morning, before he can change his mind.  Until then, he’s decided he’s not letting him out of bed.  Not all day, and maybe never.

Jensen moves restlessly, his hand reaching for Jared even in his sleep, and Jared goes back to bed.  He curls around Jensen and kisses the back of his neck, laughing when he squirms and grumbles and tries to burrow back under the covers.  He slides a hand down Jensen’s side, palms his belly, mouths the freckles along the back of his shoulders and then parts of Jensen start to wake up and he’s squirming for a different reason now.

It’s lazy Sunday morning sex.  Unhurried and easy and they’ve got all the time in the world.  It’s like they’re learning each other all over again and it’s the same and it’s different.  It’s a beginning and a promise.  Jensen holds onto him tight and Jared fucks him deep and slow and their moans and whispers mix with the rain on the windows in the song of a perfect morning.

Jensen makes coffee and waffles and they eat breakfast out on the deck, underneath the eaves of the porch.  The rain is letting up and the summer sun is trying its best to fight through the trees.  Jensen’s going to do laundry the right way so Jared will have something to wear.  Jared thinks maybe he’ll paint Jensen’s name on the mailbox.

“And you can tell everybody this is your song

It may be quite simple but now that it’s done

I hope you don’t mind

I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words

How wonderful life is while you’re in the world”

End
Gwen
